DNA Lab

A self-marking digital tool for the simulation of genetic techniques.

Description

DNA Lab is a set of genetics experiment simulations aimed at students 14-19. 15 labs include onscreen procedures, tutorials and questions.

This software features a self-marking Lab Book which marks procedures, data collection and questions. Saving you hours of work.

In DNA Lab you can carry out several different labs, with many different genomes and enzymes. The software includes simulations of Gel Electrophoresis, Capillary Electrophoresis, PCR and Bacterial Culturing.

Ideal for those looking to find DNA fingerprinting or human disease interactive labs.

Labs and their Objectives

Restriction Analysis - understand how multiple restriction enzymes interact with DNA strands
  • Lab 1 - Restriction Analysis – DNA Fragments
  • Lab 2 - Restriction Analysis – Size Estimation - Level 1
  • Lab 3 - Restriction Analysis – Size Estimation - Level 2
  • Lab 4 - Restriction analysis - combined cleavage

DNA Fingerprinting - use DNA profiling techniques to identify an individual in a criminal investigation.
  • Lab 5 - DNA Profiling - RFLP
  • Lab 6 - DNA Profiling - PCR & Gel Electrophoresis
  • Lab 7 - DNA Profiling - PCR & Capillary Electrophoresis

Paternity Analysis - use DNA profiling techniques to identify the father in a paternity case.
  • Lab 8 - Paternity Testing - RFLP
  • Lab 9 - Paternity Testing - PCR & Gel Electrophoresis
  • Lab 10 - Paternity Testing - PCR & Capillary Electrophoresis

Sequencing - use different sequencing methods to determine the sequence of bases in a DNA sample.
  • Lab 11 - DNA Sequencing - Gel Electrophoresis
  • Lab 12 - DNA Sequencing - Capillary Electrophoresis
  • Lab 13 - Sequencing of Chrohn’s Disease

Plasmids as Vectors - transform bacteria into a transgenic organisms.
  • Lab 14 - Plasmids as a Vector - level 1
  • Lab 15 - Plasmids as a Vector - level 2

Easy to Use

DNA Lab is designed to function as an educational resource where the emphasis is on learning and analysis. Students are expected to complete the Lab Book results and questions on screen and then either print it out to a printer or to a pdf file. However, we also provide .docx copies of the labs for those teachers who wish to alter the instructions and or questions.
